Hybrid Modulator
SBIR Phase II DOE Research Contract: #DE-FG-02-99ER82776
Contract Period: Calendar Q3 2000-Q1 2002

The Next Generation Linear Collider (NLC) will require pulse modulators for 3300 klystrons at 500 kV and greater than 250 A. Several different architectures are under consideration for providing this pulsed power. Under this contract, DTI developed a Hybrid Modulator -- a 6:1 pulse transformer switched by a solid state modulator at ~ 85 kV. Achieving fast risetime at high current was the primary challenge of this design.

In Phase II, a full specification (80 kV, 3-4 kA, low inductance) modulator was fabricated for 500 kV, 530 A operation to drive two klystrons. This modulator was delivered to SLAC in 2002 for assessment and demonstration with other NLC components, such as power supplies and klystrons. The design optimization includes considerations of equipment costs, life cycle costs, and technical performance.
